Train accidents leave devastation in their wake, causing potentially catastrophic injuries, deaths, and property damage. California has a long history of tragic rail incidents, from the 2008 Chatsworth collision that claimed 25 lives to the 1991 Southern Pacific derailment that spilled hazardous chemicals into the Sacramento River near Dunsmuir. Despite advances in safety technology and increased regulations, these accidents continue to occur with alarming frequency. According to California Operation Lifesaver, California led the nation with 38 fatal train collisions in 2023, followed by Florida with 21 fatalities.
